Helpful Tips for Choosing Entryway Mats

Here are several things to keep in mind when buying an entryway mat.

The first thing to consider, where will the mat be located? There are different rugs for indoor or outdoor use, with some that you can use in both places. Scraper mats are designed for outdoor use, they have a rough texture to scrape and trap the dirt off your shoes before it can be tracked into the building. Wiper/scraper mats are made for both indoor and outdoor use. They scrape dirt off your shoes and absorb any water that can be tracked in. Interior wiper carpet mats have a softer feel and trap only small amounts of dirt and water. They are mainly there to protect your floors.

This brings us to the second factor, foot traffic. Evaluate the foot traffic through your entrance. Is it high, moderate or low? If you have a high traffic area you will want to choose a rug that is designed to take a high traffic load.

Also, consider climate conditions. For example in the winter due to snow, you may need a mat that can absorb more water.

The most common mistake made with entryway mats is that people purchase mats that are too small for the area. As a general rule of thumb with mats, larger sized mats are usually better. If you purchase a mat and notice excessive wear in one area after a short amount of time, you may need to get a larger mat.

Mats work best when used in a system. A combination of an outside scraper mat and Interior wiper mat are a good example. That way the most dirt and water is trapped as they enter the building.

Once you have the proper mats, then it is just a matter of cleaning and maintaining the mats. Mats are the first line of defense from water and dirt coming into your facility and will only work if they are clean. Indoor matting should be vacuumed at least once a day, depending on the foot traffic. It is also important to vacuum and mop the floor under that mat. If dirt gets underneath the mat, it can slip or curl, making it less effective and a possible hazard for people. Exterior mats need even more cleaning than the interior mats do. These mats will need to be pulled up and washed off regularly. If applicable you can pressure spray your mats. Just make sure they are dry when you put them back out.
